The Hike

Originally built to move cattle, the AB Young Trail was improved by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The CCC, along with several other conservation agencies, built thousands of miles of trails during this period.

Walk through the campground, cross Oak Creek, and turn left (south) onto the trail that parallels the creek. The well-maintained AB Young Trail turns sharply right and starts climbing to the northwest. The broadleaf trees in the riparian habitat along the creek are soon left behind as the trail climbs through ponderosa pine forest.

After a short distance the trail begins switchbacking directly up the steep slope. The dry southwest exposure supports dense chaparral brush, and the view opens up as you climb. Just below the rim the trail veers north in a long final switchback. At the rim the trail enters pine forest again. Turn southwest and follow the cairned trail, which is fainter, along the pine-forested rim to the crest of an east–west ridge. Here the trail turns west and follows the flat-topped ridge to East Pocket Knob and the end of the trail at the Forest Service fire tower. Get permission from the lookout before climbing the tower for a panoramic view of the Mogollon Rim and Oak Creek Canyon.
